- Why Screen Savers?
-
- The vintage "raison d'etre" for screen savers was to prevent "burn in" of
- static pictures into the CRT's of older monitors. Modern CRT's, however, are
- nearly burn-in proof. So, nowadays there may be three reasons left for
- installing a screen saver:
-
- 1) entertainment,
- 2) hiding the screen content against prying eyes ( => password protection!),
- 3) saving energy.
-
- The latter has been overlooked for a long time, but this is about to change
- (see i.e. the buzzword "green computing"). Following the figures of a well-
- known manufacturer, blanking a monitor reduces its power consumption to about
- 80%. Of course, to achieve this, you will have to dismiss eye-catching
- animation and resign to a pure blanking saver, like the "Lazybones" module.
